Unusual timing of Mac mini and Mac Studio updates all about AI, claims report
Apple surprised many when it quietly announced updated Mac mini and Mac Studio models shortly before its September event. We would normally have expected these announcements to be part of that event.
One strong theory is that the company may be making a lot of big announcements in its ‘Surprise and shine‘ keynote, and therefore wanted to get these updates out of the way beforehand. But a new report presents another theory …
Announcing the new Mac mini and Mac Studio models just a fortnight ahead of the September 9th event seemed surprising. Why not wait the extra couple of weeks and do it properly, rather than just via press releases?
The Information says that the decision was made because the company was taken by surprise by the level of demand for the models for AI applications, and with some configurations unavailable for months, Apple brought the announcements forward for this reason.
There’s certainly no doubt that the power of Apple Silicon has made both the Mac mini and Mac Studio popular options for those wanting to run AI models locally. For example, we’ve seen researchers use Thunderbolt 5 to turn four Mac Studios into an extremely powerful AI cluster.
I can also believe that Apple did not initially predict the scale of demand this was going to generate.
What seems less likely, however, is the idea that two weeks makes any worthwhile difference to the situation. To me, it’s just too small a gap for this to be a credible explanation. Personally, I think the existing theory we outlined is the more likely one.
Apple will want to make a very big fuss about the launch of its first foldable iPhone and also ensure that the iPhone 18 Pro isn’t seen as an also-ran. If Apple does indeed unveil the HomePad smart home hub as we expect, that too will be a major announcement.
We then need to add in a new Apple TV and HomePod mini 2 – both with Siri AI capabilities – two new Apple Watch models, and potentially new AirPods too. That’s a lot of announcements for a single keynote, so I could absolutely understand wanting to launch the new Mac desktops beforehand.
