iOS 27 code shows you may be able to replace Siri AI with Claude or ChatGPT [Poll]

It’s been more than a year since we asked whether Apple should give us the option of choosing our own AI chatbot to replace Siri AI. At that time, the majority of you were in favor. A developer who has been studying the code in iOS 27 and macOS 27 has discovered that it does indeed appear at least some people will have this option … In our previous poll, two thirds of you said yes, absolutely, we should have that choice – with a further 15% also preferring it. Only 6% of you were strongly opposed. At the time, I fully expected Apple to be reluctant to do this, raising its usual objection that opening up the system to third-party apps creates privacy and security risks. Developer PDFU has, however, seemingly found evidence in iOS 27 and macOS 27 that Apple will be supporting this. The video demo shows them selecting Claude as the AI assistant. iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate have private hooks that let apps add Siri Extensions and replace Siri AI’s server backend with third-party models.First, here’s Claude running as a Siri Extension using the Model Delegation API in App Intents. If this choice is made available globally, I would see that as a win for everyone – even Apple. It’s an obvious win for users, as we can each choose our preferred AI platform and because the competition will drive Apple’s own pace of improvements to Siri AI. That impetus, along with keeping as many Apple users as possible happy, also makes it a win for the iPhone maker. However, there is a strong possibility that this feature will only be enabled within the EU, where Apple has already had to make a number of similar accommodations. Whether users in the US and elsewhere will be able to do it remains to be seen.
