The Witcher 3′s Geralt Skin For Diablo 4 Has A Really Annoying Requirement

CD Projekt Red is bringing its games to Battle.net. The surprise collaboration with Blizzard’s storefront began with the announcement of The Witcher 3 making the jump at Gamescom, and continued this weekend with the news that Cyberpunk 2077 will be arriving on the launcher as well. To sweeten the deal, a Geralt of Rivia skin for Diablo 4‘s Barbarian class will also be available. Unfortunately, the only way to unlock it is to pre-order The Witcher 3‘s upcoming Songs of the Past expansion on Battle.net.
The details of the collaboration were shared during a 30 Years of Battle.net panel at BlizzCon 2026. In addition to announcing that Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty expansion will join Blizzard’s storefront later this year, CDPR also gave players a better look at the Geralt skin coming for Diablo 4‘s Barbarian class, and explained what players will need to do to unlock it. While it’s a nice surprise for fans who almost exclusively play Blizzard games inside the Battle.net launcher, everyone else is being left out in the cold.
Requiring a Battle.net pre-order essentially excludes anyone who primarily plays on Steam or console, and would even force people who already own The Witcher 3 to buy it again on Battle.net if they decide to play Songs of the Past there after all. As you can imagine, players have a number of complaints, and they aren’t just isolated to the method for unlocking Geralt’s first appearance in Sanctuary.

“Why have they turned Geralt into a meathead?” asked one player on The Witcher 3 subreddit. “This being locked to battle net is diabolical,” wrote someone else on X. “Why would I buy cosmetics for a game y’all just confirmed yesterday is no longer being supported with major content updates?” someone wrote in direct response to the Diablo social media account. The comment was a reaction to the news over the weekend that there will be no more expansions for Diablo 4 in the lead-up to Diablo 5.
Regarding the aesthetic critiques, of which there are many, its worth remembering that the Geralt cosmetic skin for Diablo 4 had to adhere to the existing Barbarian hitbox and move set. “And you can see here — for those of you in the know — that this armor is heavily inspired by Geralt’s iconic Kaer Morhen armor,” The Witcher 3 level design lead Miles Tost explained. “There’s a bit of Barbarian sprinkled on top…you see all the fur. I think you can see here how we’re trying to create collaborations like these in a way that makes sense for both teams and worlds and also fans. I hope you can see here how we have created something that feels right at home in Sanctuary.”
As for the the purchase requirements, however, it’s a bummer that the collaboration isn’t just available to anyone who both owns Diablo 4 and pre-orders Songs of the Past. Perhaps CDPR and Blizzard’s plan is to eventually make the Geralt skin available for standalone purchase to anyone with the game. At that point, everyone can start complaining about the price instead.
