GameStop Is Now Selling Used PS5 Pros For $1400
It’s getting more expensive and annoying to play and enjoy video games in 2026. Case in point, GameStop is now selling used PlayStation 5 Pro consoles for $1400 as the sought-after machines become harder and harder to find in the lead-up to Grand Theft Auto 6‘s launch.
On Monday, someone leaked on Reddit what appears to be an internal message that GameStop sent to stores, alerting employees that the company was increasing the price of several pre-owned variants of Sony’s more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro console. Currently, the PS5 Pro has a suggested retail price of $900, though good luck finding a store that actually has them in stock for that. GameStop’s memo suggested it would instead start charging anywhere from $1,400 to $1,500 for various versions of the PS5 Pro. Yes, that’s way more than the cost of a new PS5 Pro, something the alleged memo claims is “intentional.”
On October 6, GameStop updated the price of a standard edition pre-owned PS5 Pro on its website to $1,400, seemingly confirming the validity of the leaked memo. Currently, as of 9:30 a.m. ET, the pre-owned PS5 Pro on GameStop’s site is out of stock. A new PS5 Pro is still listed at $900 on GameStop’s site. It is also out of stock.
Kotaku has contacted GameStop for more information about this change and what’s behind it.
Some former GameStop employees have suggested the reason for the massive price increase on used consoles is because GameStop, like everyone else in the world, is struggling to get their hands on new PS5 Pros. And those consoles are pricey to stock and have to allegedly be sold at $900 or bundled with other items to increase the price. Don’t worry, Sony says it has all the RAM it needs to make more PS5 consoles.
However, used consoles can be sold for any price GameStop decides on, and are much cheaper for it to acquire. The chain can offer people trade-in credit far below the hardware’s actual value to take advantage of people who might not realize just how hard a PS5 Pro is to get right now. So these former employees believe GameStop is prioritizing used PS5 Pros, which are being sold online for $1,400 or more, over trying to stock new consoles in order to make more money as people rush out to upgrade their consoles before Grand Theft Auto 6′s launch in November.
GameStop isn’t the only retailer that’s charging more than $900 for a PS5 Pro. Walmart, Best Buy, and Amazon, among others, also have PS5 Pro consoles, some used, listed for $1,400 or more. However, these are being sold through third-party resellers and partners and not directly from the retailers.
Anyway, remember when the PS5 Pro was announced at $700, and people thought that price was wild? I mean, it was, but now it looks so quaint.
