Fuel prices added to Google Maps as petrol and diesel costs soar
The prices will be displayed when people search for fuel, as well as listed underneath descriptions of forecourts
Google Maps will now show fuel prices to help motorists find cheaper petrol and diesel in the UK as costs continue to soar.
From Thursday, a search for forecourts on the app will display their locations as well as their pricing, using data supplied via the government's Fuel Finder scheme.
It is a legal requirement for UK forecourts to add their prices to Fuel Finder within 30 minutes of changing them.
It comes days after the price of diesel topped £2 per litre for the first time, which RAC policy head Simon Williams described as "a price threshold no one wanted to cross".
There are multiple apps dedicated to finding the cheapest fuel around, but Google Maps is used by 77% of Britain's adult population for general navigation, according to Ofcom.
Fuel costs around the world have been dramatically impacted by the US war with Iran and Russia's war with Ukraine.
Diesel price has since fallen by 2p but the AA says an average 55 litre tank of diesel still costs around £110, with the petrol equivalent coming to around £96.
The feature is already part of the navigation app Waze, which is used by around 2 million people in the UK.
Apple Maps does not show the price of fuel, although some third-party apps can link to its maps on iPhones.
