How a folk band, football club and Fifa 11 came together for an unlikely terrace anthem
Eddie Keogh was presented with a Wycombe shirt on Tuesday
It's a tale as old as time. Take one 16-year-old video game, a rising indie-folk band and a League One football team and what do you get?
A new football anthem for Wycombe Wanderers, courtesy of the unlikely figures of Irish chart-toppers Kingfishr, whose singer was the special guest under the Tuesday night lights of the club's Adams Park stadium this week.
It's a strange musical connection that came about in a way avid fans of sports video games can understand - via Fifa 11, a game the band said they started playing while recording their second album.
The band adopted Wycombe Wanderers as their team in the game and eventually posted a song for the club, which has racked up more than 190,000 views on TikTok, external.
The club caught wind of the song, written in an Irish folk style and with a lyrical focus on "the Wycombe wanderer, wandering away" and replied to the original post by saying: "You can wander our way anytime."
So it came that lead singer Eddie Keogh took up the offer on Tuesday night, as first reported by Irish sports site Balls.ie, external, and attended the club's 4-1 EFL Trophy victory over Bristol Rovers.
The song was even playing over the tannoy as he arrived, to the singer's shock as demonstrated by his "what is going on?" post to TikTok, external.
The club invited him onto the pitch where he was presented with his own club shirt with 'Kingfishr 1' on the back.
