Here’s how iPhone 18 Pro will differentiate itself from prior models
iPhone 18 Pro will be unveiled next month, and many iPhone users might be asking: what’s going to be truly different this year? Here are some key ways Apple plans to differentiate iPhone 18 Pro from prior models, per the latest rumors.
Every year, Apple upgrades the iPhone’s camera system in various ways. But it’s rare for big changes to impact the Main camera.
iPhone 17 Pro brought an overhauled front camera and improved Telephoto. With iPhone 18 Pro, Apple is rumored to have even more Telephoto upgrades, but also big changes for the Main camera. Leaker Fixed Focus Digital recently hinted as much.
He says the iPhone 18 Pro line’s Main camera upgrade is “confirmed” and results in a more than 2mm increase in the “aluminum alloy back panel.” In other words, the camera plateau may be getting even thicker this year than what had previously been rumored.
Why such a significant increase? In a follow-up post, the leaker says it’s due to an “Enlarged main camera module.”
Mark Gurman has said on multiple occasions that iPhone 18 Pro will have “some of the biggest camera hardware upgrades in the lineup’s history.” We’re expecting a variable aperture feature, but it sounds like there’s a lot more to the story with this year’s camera changes.
Apple started transitioning away from Qualcomm 5G modems last year when iPhone 16e launched with a C1 modem designed in-house. iPhone Air continued the trend by using a C1X modem. But Apple’s most popular models—iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone 17—all stuck with Qualcomm.
Rumors indicate iPhone 18 Pro will make the transition to an Apple-designed C2 modem. This should bring advantages like:
Partly because of C2, and the new A20 Pro chip, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to offer the best iPhone battery life ever.
But iPhone 18 Pro Max should be especially impressive. That’s because regulatory filings point to a roughly 10% larger physical battery.
